According to regional head Serhii Lysak, the Russian missile attack on Kryvyi Rih, a central Ukrainian city, has killed at least 16 people and injured dozens of people.
President Volodymyr Zelensky grew up in Kryvyi Rih, six of whom were children.
Images from the scene showed at least one victim lying on the playground blocked by police. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s defense administration, said the ballistic missiles had landed in the center of the residential area.
A video shows a large 10-story apartment block being attacked and destroyed, with the victim lying on the road outside.
The attack was Friday evening, with Kryvyi Rih being one of the deadliests of Kryvyi Rih since the full Russian invasion in 2022, following efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to cease fire.
Zelensky wrote on social media that at least five buildings were damaged during Friday’s strike: “It’s just a reason to continue like this: Russia doesn’t want a ceasefire, we see.”
Kryvyi Rih’s regional leader said more than 40 people had been treated for wounds, with the youngest being only three months old.
Military chiefs from Britain and France met in Kiev on Friday to discuss foreign peacekeeping personnel stationed in Ukraine as part of a potential ceasefire agreement.
However, there are few signs of violence.
Kryvyi Rih was also attacked earlier this week when a building in the center was attacked and four people died.
Earlier on Friday, a strike by Russian drones on the northeastern city of Kharkif took five more people.
France and Britain accused Russia of dragging its feet on the Ukrainian peace agreement. British Foreign Minister David Lammy told reporters at a NATO summit in Brussels that the Russian leader “can now accept a ceasefire but he continues to bombard his civilian population.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Russians know the U.S. position, “we will soon know from their answers whether they take real peace seriously or a strategy of delay.”
Kryvyi Rih is about 40 miles (70 kilometers) from the front line in eastern Ukraine and has a population of 600,000, and is said to be the longest city in Europe.
