American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Mike Sommers weighs in on Biden’s recent ban on oil and gas drilling and the administration banning certain natural gas water heaters.
Biden’s last-minute executive action on offshore oil and gas drilling may have landed him in hot water, as an energy expert warns of potential harm to American consumers.
Mike Sommers, president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, called on Congress to fix Biden’s costly action after announcing a ban on new drilling and more oil and natural gas development in more than 625 million acres of US coastal and inshore waters.
“Unfortunately, these kinds of midnight regulations being put in place by the Biden administration will undermine American energy security and harm American consumers. This is not what America voted for,” Sommers stressed.

Biden’s executive action is coming two weeks before the end of his mandate.
“My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these shores could cause irreversible damage to the places we love and is unnecessary to meet the needs of energy of our country,” the president said in a statement. . “It’s not worth the risks. As the climate crisis continues to threaten communities across the country and we transition to a clean energy economy, now is the time to protect these shores for our children and grandchildren “.

The President also invoked the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, viz President-elect Trump may be limited in its ability to reverse the action.
Sommers revealed that Congress has “a number of different options that they could pursue” to overturn Biden’s effort, arguing that the new mandate “will hurt consumers.”
“The Congressional Review Act is certainly one of them. But they could also pursue it through the reconciliation proceedings because of the royalties that would be earned outside of the development of these resources, because their federal resources would be huge,” Sommers explained.

He told host Maria Bartiromo that Congress needs to act quickly and make sure it’s a “top priority” during his early days on Capitol Hill.
“The American people certainly did not vote for less energy development in the United States. In fact, energy was on the ballot during this election and energy won,” Sommers said.
Biden’s ban on oil and gas drilling comes on the heels of his decision to ban certain natural gas water heaters from the market, a move Sommers says will “harm the most vulnerable among us.”

“That’s what’s so sad about it, that it’s the people who can least afford it. They’re going to have to pay more for these new water heaters that they’re going to have to install and fit into their places where they live,” he expressed.
Sommers argued that the new ban on natural gas water heaters is not only a regressive tax in Americabut also Americans.
“This is a sad day, I think, because it’s the poor who will be most affected by this ban,” he said.
