Canadian man arrested at Delhi airport with crocodile skull


Indian authorities said they arrested a Canadian man at Delhi airport for carrying a crocodile skull in his luggage.

The 32-year-old was first stopped at security at the airport on Monday while boarding a flight to Canada.

“Upon inspection, a skull with sharp teeth, similar to the jaw of a small crocodile, weighing approximately 777 grams (1.71 pounds) and wrapped in beige cloth was found,” Delhi Customs said in a statement on Thursday.

The man has been arrested and the skull has been handed over to the forest and wildlife department, they said.

Officials said possession of crocodile skulls violated India’s wildlife and customs laws.

Analysis of the skull by the Forest and Wildlife Department found that it belonged to a species protected under India’s Wildlife Protection Act.

“The texture, tooth pattern, well-developed bony palate and nostrils confirm that the object is the skull of a small crocodile,” they said.

“The man did not have the mandatory permission required to carry wildlife items,” said forest officer Rajesh Tandon.

Further testing is underway to determine the exact subspecies of the animal.

Meanwhile, Delhi Customs said a case has been registered against the man and investigation is ongoing.

Last year, a 32-year-old Canadian woman was stopped at Delhi Airport after she was found with the horns of an unknown animal hidden in her luggage. The woman told officials that she had picked it up while on a long trek in northern Ladakh and decided to take it back as a souvenir.
