There’s more nuance to Doomguy than just him being a guy who wipes out hellspawn with the BFG. He is also an art connoisseur – or at least that is a new one DESTRUCTION mod you may believe.
Modders Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone turned E1M1, the first map of the original game, into an interactive art gallery. Destruction: The Gallery Experiencewhich is a free browser game on Itch.io and New landDoomguy is seen holding a glass of wine or a can of beer while looking at classic works of art, collecting money and listening to “Suite No. 1 in G major” by Johann Sebastian Bach.
“Destruction: The Gallery Experience created as an art piece designed to parody the unique pretend world of gallery openings,” reads the game’s Itch.io page. “In this experience, you will be able to walk around and appreciate some fine art while sipping wine and enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres at id Software’s beautifully renovated and re-imagined E1M1 DESTRUCTION (1993).”
You can use the money to buy things like socks and totes from the gift shop, and eat hors d’oeuvres to fill a cheese meter (there’s one for drinks too). Doomguy even sports a pair of trendy glasses here.
When you interact with artworks like Jacopo da Sellaio’s Scenes from the Story of the Argonauts or by Piero di Cosimo Returning from the Hunt, you will find a link to the relevant Metropolitan Museum of Art webpage. Alternatively, Doomguy may tell you that he no longer wants to look at a particular piece. Maybe he just wanted to go back to shooting demons. Same, Doomguy, same.
