Lamar Jackson has won as many playoff games as NFL MVP trophies: twice.
A lack of playoff wins is increasingly an issue for the Ravens star quarterback when AFC third-seeded Baltimore takes on the sixth-ranked Pittsburgh Steelers in a wild-card round game on Saturday night He hopes to change that narrative. Sky Sports NFL live broadcast Sunday morning starts at 1am.
Jackson achieved a 2-4 record in the playoffs. He completed 6 interceptions and 6 fumbles in the playoffs (three of which were recovered by opponents). In his postseason career, he has thrown for six touchdowns and rushed for three scores.
The 28-year-old admits he needs to relax more. “I’m just too excited, that’s all. Too irritated,” Jackson told reporters this week about his postseason troubles.
“It’s a narrative until it’s gone,” sky sports’ Neil Reynolds responds to Jackson’s comments on latest episode Inside the Huddle Podcast.
“He went 2-4 in the playoffs with a 75.7 quarterback rating and his career regular-season rating was 101.9. Now he’s basically admitting that it’s had some effect on his mind. “I’m going to take a good look at Lamar in the early stages of this game.” “
Added Phoebe Schechter, a former NFL assistant coach with the Buffalo Bills: “These clips will be played in Steelers meetings this week to show ‘Look, he’s scared.’
“He’s doing himself a disservice there because it’s going to be ammunition for the Steelers, and he’s also missing his star receiver Zay Flowers, which is a big part of it.”
One player who could save the Ravens is star running back Derrick Henry.
In his first season with the team, Henry rushed for 1,921 yards, ranking second in the NFL, and scored 16 touchdowns, tied for first. He appeared in seven playoff games, helping the Tennessee Titans reach the AFC Championship Game in the 2019 season, where they ultimately lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
How the Steelers defense fares against Jackson and Henry could be the key to the game.
“The Steelers did a great job containing Lamar,” Schechter added. “They have very disciplined players on their defensive line, experienced players.
“They know what they need to do to keep him in the pocket, and if they can do that, they can limit what Derrick Henry can do to you because they have those bodies that can knock them down and make plays. Defender in space.”
Saturday’s game was the fifth meeting between the two teams in playoff history. Pittsburgh has won three of its last four games, but the Ravens won their most recent playoff game, a 30-17 win in the wild-card round 10 years ago.
This season, the Ravens (12-5) and Steelers (10-7) met twice in the regular season, with both teams winning at home.
On November 17, Pittsburgh won Game 1 18-16 on Chris Boswell’s six field goals. In the rematch on Dec. 21, Jackson threw three touchdown passes and Henry rushed for 162 yards as part of Baltimore’s 34-17 victory. Pittsburgh’s losing streak ends the season.
“On the surface, this game is punishment for the Steelers losing four straight and having to travel to Baltimore,” Reynolds added. “But it’s also a team they’re very familiar with and a team they’ve beaten this season.
“Even the game Baltimore won before Christmas, late in the second half, Baltimore trailed 17-17 until they pulled away.
“I do think Baltimore will win this game, but I’m not sure it’s as simple as the seeding and recent form would suggest.”
