OpenAI is best known for this AI modelswhich until now is available mainly on cloud servers, on its website and in its apps for PCs and mobile devices.

However, the company does not limit its ambitions in the field of software: Now at X, Caitlin Kalinowski, a member of the technical staff of OpenAI and previously head of AR glasses at Metaposted a message announcing that the company was hiring first papers in hardware robotics.

This includes an EE sensing engineer “to help us design sensor suites for our robots,” and a robotics mechanical design engineer to create “gears, actuators, motors and linkages for robots.”

The listings also include a description of the new effort:

Our robotics team is focused on unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AG -level intelligence in dynamic, real-world settings. Working across the model stack, we integrate cutting-edge hardware and software to explore a wide range of robotic form factors. We strive to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with physical constraints.

Kalinowski himself announced his hiring at OpenAI little more than two months ago “to lead in robotics and consumer hardware.”

Previously, OpenAI was reported to be working on hardware with the former Apple lead designer Jony Iveand the company has partnered with robotics startup Figure to provide the models that power the latter’s humanoid robots.

However, the new post from Kalinowski and job listings announce the company’s most serious and heaviest investment in building its own robotics division to date, and could mean it’s competing with Figure.

This is not a new area for OpenAI, however, as it is also competing with and getting investment money from Microsoft.
