Clashes as crowds welcome Mozambican opposition leader home from exile




Mozambique’s main opposition leader returned from weeks in exile on Thursday, claiming victory in October’s presidential election and being greeted by thousands of cheering supporters, although one person was killed as police tried to disperse the crowd. Several people were also injured as police barred fans from going to the international airport to greet Venacio Mondlane, who knelt on the ground holding a Bible as he exited the terminal. Mondlane, who has been absent for more than two months, is back as Daniel Chapo of the ruling Frelimo party prepares to be sworn in as president on January 15.
