Gervonta Davis showed off his dazzling hand speed today as he put on the gloves and worked out with coach Barry Hunter in preparation for his matchup against Lamont Roach on March 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York Prepare to defend his WBA lightweight gold belt.

Davis looks great with the gloves on, but it’s a bit much as his opponent, super featherweight Roach, has no power and is at a disadvantage in this fight. It would be great if tanks worked out like dogs and fought against really talented people. Then you’re interested in watching him play, but not when he’s drafted like everyone else in Davis’ carefully managed 12-year career.
Tank Davis’ last seven opponents
——Frank Martin
—Ryan Garcia
——Hector Garcia
– Rolando “Rolly” Romero
——Isaac Cruz
——Mario Barrios
——Leo Santa Cruz
That’s a mediocre group of guys, not one of them is a relevant fighter at lightweight, not one of them. So, it’s great that Tank Davis is good at hitting the gloves, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing minimal opposition at a $75 PPV. These types of battles should be free to play because the purpose of these matches is mismatched.
Tank looked a lot like his former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his mitt training. But their fighting styles are very different. Thankfully, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr.
Still, Tank is very Mayweather-like in that he’s selective beyond his glove training. Floyd was the best at picking them out and keeping dangerous predators away during his career. Now, Tank is following his safety-first blueprint.
Where are the challenges?
Fans want to see Tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting opponents who have a chance to beat him. Davis or his management always chooses the fighter he favors the most.
They want to see tanks fighting one of these sharks:
——Shaquor Stevenson
—Keyshawn Davis
– Andy Cruz
——Edwin de los Santos
– Vasily Lomachenko
——William Zepeda
——Bahram Murtazhaliev
——Sebastian Fundola
——Serhy Bokhachuk
– Israel Madrimov
