Caroline Dubois knew exactly what she wanted for her birthday on Saturday.
WBC lightweight champion Dubois defends her world title for the first time against Jessica Kamara move on with life sky sportsshe not only wants to beat the Canadian, but she wants to win by knockout.
She will aim to finish within the distance in the event at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield.
“Today is my birthday, so it’s a great little gift to give myself,” said DuBois, who turns 24 today (Jan. 11). sky sports.
“She’s a game. She’s going to try. She’s going to come and do her best. She’s going to throw everything at me. But I’m able to take it and give it back.”
Dubois puts her world title belt on the same bill in an exciting clash between British and Commonwealth super middleweight champions Callum Simpson and Steed Woodall
Kamara was a seasoned pro and he did warn Dubois. “She looked past me. She looked way beyond me,” the Canadian told sky sports. “Honestly, I have more experience in my career and I feel like I’m more mature. She’s immature. She doesn’t see the task ahead of her. She doesn’t really see that.
“It’s a big mistake. She’ll see it.”
The Canadian believed she could unseat Du Bois when they fought. “I believe in myself. I’ve put in the work. I’ve had a good career but it’s been tough. I’ve had a lot of challenges and I feel like I have what it takes to beat Caroline,” Kamara said.
“She’s a great fighter. I have a lot of respect for her, but she’s not superhuman. She’s beatable and I believe I can do it.
“I believe in my ability to make adjustments mid-fight and get out of difficult situations.
“I’m confident in my abilities. I’m confident in my skills. I feel strong. I believe in myself.”
Kamara’s record is four career losses, but she has also had major wins, including defeating former world champion Choi Hyun-mi in South Korea last year.
Du Bois denied this, however.
“It’s okay. I’ve never judged Choi. I think a lot of people know what’s going on with Choi, she’s so inactive. She hasn’t fought in a year. She’s chasing other things and her mind is all over the place,” said the Englishman.
“Jessica had a chance to do it. I’m sure Choi underestimated Jessica.
“To me, it didn’t make any sense because I thought I was going to stop Choi.
“All I know is – I’m going to give her everything I’ve got and we’ll see. I know I’m going to win this fight. It’s just about how I finish it.”
“It shows I’m serious”
The live broadcast starts at 7:30 p.m. sky sports main event and Sky Sports+will be Sam Hickey.
Hickey is a star amateur boxer from Scotland and this is only his second professional fight.
But he’s already taking on an ambitious opponent. Hickey will box against Lewis Howells. As an amateur Wales international, Howells had lost once in his career, but that was against Kyran Jones, an undefeated and excellent fighter.
Hickey is rising to the challenge. “It shows that I’m really serious about this sport, doesn’t it? Not many boxers do that in a second fight,” the middleweight told sky sports.
“Obviously, I come from a good pedigree as an amateur, but it just shows what I’m all about. I want to fight guys who are going to win and I think that’s going to be good for me.
“The guy’s good enough, but if he wants to win, he’s going to be shooting on foot, not on a bike.”
Hickey was an impressive British boxer, winning bronze at the European Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games. Hickie dropped out of the Olympics in his weight class and was unable to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Scot plans to beat Howells and pursue more opportunities as a pro.
“Every fighter is dangerous,” Hickey said. “I don’t want to cause trouble. I’m here. This is business. I need to perform well and have people talking about me.
“What I want to achieve in boxing – I need to beat guys like that. It’s good to test against guys like that early in my career.
“There will be a lot of people watching, hopefully a lot of Scots. I’m looking forward to it.”
