Gael Monfils breaks Roger Federer’s record to become oldest ATP Tour champion at ASB Classic | Tennis News

Gael Monfils made history by becoming the oldest ATP Tour singles champion at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The 38-year-old Frenchman, who won his first tour title 20 years ago, defeated Zizou Bergès 6-3 6-4 in the final.

He surpassed Roger Federer, who won the last title in Basel in 2019, to become the oldest champion since the establishment of the ATP Tour in 1990.

He is also the oldest men’s singles champion since 43-year-old Australian Ken Rosewall won the tour singles title in Hong Kong in 1977.

“Very satisfied,” said Monfils, ranked 52nd. “Winning a 13th championship is very special. I don’t win a lot. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and I only ended up winning 13 times.”

Speaking about his place in history, the former Ten star added: “It’s a different record. You’re always happy to have a record but I want to do more, I want to play more A little more, so why not win a record?” Later. “

Monfils will face compatriot Giovanni Mpesi Pericard, who is 17 years younger than him, in the first round of the Australian Open.
