‘Soul Man’ singer Sam Moore dies at 89

The soul and R&B duo performed together for nearly two decades, beginning in the early 1960s. Known for their energetic and gospel-infused performances, the duo has influenced artists such as Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, among many others.

In the 1980s, the Blues Brothers – comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi – reinvigorated soul and blues when they covered Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” on “Saturday Night Live” Back to people’s perspective. They also often pay tribute to Sam and Dave during their performances.

Moore was born on October 12, 1935 in Miami, Florida, and began his singing career in church.

Moore struggled with drug addiction throughout the 1970s, which ultimately affected his career. His wife, Joyce, helped him get treatment for his drug addiction. After he sobered up, Moore began taking on work he never expected.

“I did a lot of cruises, a lot of oldies shows,” he once told The Associated Press.

“It’s funny looking back now. I’ve done a lot of shows, and if I did a show with an oldies show, I’d have to actually audition,” he said. “But you know what? You shut up, get up, sing as hard as you can, perform as hard as you can and then get a little bit of money, go about your business and try to pay those bills. I think about it now It was kind of funny, but at the time, man, it was serious.”

Moore is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Michelle and two grandchildren.
