Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s END decided at BCCI meeting, Shubman Gill’s role in latter’s exit revealed

The future of two stalwarts of the Indian national cricket team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in Tests looks very bleak. According to the Hindustan Times, it is reported that the BCCI selection committee discussed the future of the two players on Saturday (January 11).

The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, met in Mumbai to announce India’s squad for the T20I series against England. However, the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also being talked about, with head coach Gautam Gambhir, the India captain himself, A Agarkar, BCCI general secretary-elect Devagit Saikia and newly elected International Cricket Federation president Jay Shah were present.

Rohit Sharma’s future will entirely depend on selection committee

It is reported that Rohit Sharma’s future will entirely depend on the selection committee as the BCCI officials have left it to the selectors. But things are not looking good for the Indian skipper as Ajit Agarkar and his team are worried about the number of opening batsmen in Test cricket.

Rohit Sharma has scored just 164 runs in the last 8 Tests. In the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he scored only 31 runs with an average of around 6 runs. This also caused him to receive a lot of criticism, and some people called for him to retire.

Sources familiar with the development said things are not going to go according to Rohit Sharma’s wish. While underlining the concerns of the selection committee, he also expressed his confidence that the captain of the Indian national cricket team would take a decision in due course. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said:

“That’s not to say Rohit’s ‘I’m not going anywhere’ statement is the way things will end up. It’s no secret that selectors are concerned about Rohit’s downward spiral in Test cricket, but the understanding is that the captain will do Make thoughtful decisions at the right time.”

Virat Kohli’s fate to be decided by Shubman Gill

Related to Virat Kohli’s future, it is learned that the selectors are also worried about his form, but everything will depend on young batsman Shubman Gill. The senior batsman’s future will depend on the performance of the latter.

Sources say Shubman Gill is yet to adapt to the role like Virat Kohli did before Sachin Tendulkar retired. He said the selection committee will also take a decision on the matter soon. He said:

“With five months to go before the five-match Test series against England, the selectors are likely to deliberate on the matter before forming an opinion. Shubman Gill has not settled into Kohli’s role as well as he was expected to Kohli is far from ready when Sachin Tendulkar hangs up his boots, a factor that will be taken into consideration by the Agarkar selection committee.”

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill struggled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. While the senior batsman only scored around 190 runs, Gill managed just 93 runs in five innings at 18.60 with no fifty.
