Rohit Sharma bluntly told BCCI “He will continue as captain till…”

Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma will continue to serve as Test captain and ODI captain for some time. According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the veteran batsman himself is understood to have said that he will lead the team until the BCCI finds a suitable successor.

The BCCI held a review meeting in Mumbai on Saturday to address the recent poor performance of the Indian national cricket team. BCCI officials along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma took part in the discussion.

Rohit Sharma will continue as captain for the next few months until the board selects the future captain

One of the hot topics of the meeting was the future captaincy of India’s Test and ODI teams. Rohit Sharma has reportedly decided to continue as the leader in both formats until the selectors choose his successor.

Rohit reportedly told the BCCI that “he will continue as captain for the next few months until the board selects the future captain” and that whoever is selected will have his “full support”. It was also decided that he will lead the team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, a decision on his successor will be taken after the ICC Champions Trophy. Currently, the Indian team is captained by Rohit Sharma in Tests and ODIs, while Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain of the team in the T20I format after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Reports added that the issue of awarding the Test captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah was also discussed. He led the team in two matches in Australia in the absence of Rohit Sharma. But there are some doubts over his claim to captaincy in the longest format of the game.

There were concerns that Bumrah could lead India in five games due to workload management issues. The premier fast bowler was injured in the fifth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 after playing four games in Australia and concerns about his fitness have been raised ever since.

Virat Kohli will get some time, talks may take place after ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The BCCI also discussed Virat Kohli’s poor performance during the meeting. It is reported that the officials have decided to give the batsman some time and discussions regarding his place in the team and his poor performance will be held after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The BCCI also wants all the big names to participate in the domestic circuit. However, if any player opts out due to workload management, then he must obtain permission from the physio, head coach and selectors. The governing body has also stressed on taking the health of players more seriously.
