Shakib Al Hassan suspended from bowling after failing bowling action test

The latest tests conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Sports Science Center in Chennai confirmed that Shakib’s movements did not comply with the legal limits prescribed by the National Sports Authority. International Cricket Council (International Chamber of Commerce). Therefore, his existing bowling suspension remains in effect.

Shakib’s suspension is a big blow for Bangladesh, especially with the Champions Trophy just a month away. While the 37-year-old is still eligible as a specialist batsman, his absence as a bowler leaves a big void in the team’s plans.

Suspension details

this bangladesh cricket The board of directors (BCB) issued a statement regarding Shakib’s situation.

“Following an initial independent assessment by Loughborough University in the UK, the player’s current bowling suspension from international cricket remains in effect. A successful re-evaluation is required to lift the bowling suspension,” ESPNcricinfo quoted a statement as saying.

Shakib’s bowling action first came to attention during the County Championship match between Surrey and Somerset last September. The umpires reported his behaviour, prompting the all-rounder to get tested.

Test failures and bowling bans

Shakib underwent his first bowling action assessment at Loughborough University in England but he failed to meet the required standards. As a result, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned him from bowling in all matches organized by the board.

The International Cricket Federation extended the ban to all domestic and international matches organized by its member committees. The ruling made Shakib unavailable as a bowler in both formats of the game.

Even though Shakib has been suspended, he is trying to clear his name through the re-evaluation process in Chennai. However, his failure to pass the test meant he was still banned from bowling.

Impact on Bangladesh Champions Trophy campaign

Shakib’s continued suspension is a huge setback for Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy campaign. The veteran all-rounder has been a key part of the team’s success over the years, be it with the bat or the ball.

Without Shakib’s bowling services, Bangladesh will need to rely heavily on other bowling options. Team management will likely make adjustments to compensate for his absence from the offense.

Shakib’s controversial year

2024 has been a tumultuous year for Shakib, filled with controversies on and off the field. His participation in the Bangladesh Awami League government as an MP drew criticism, especially during widespread protests in July and August.

Shakib’s political involvement affected his chances of playing in the national team. He missed several crucial series, including the farewell Test against South Africa at Mirpur. Protests for and against his political role were held on the outskirts of Dhaka, fueling tensions.

The all-rounder also missed Bangladesh’s ODI series against Afghanistan and West Indies, further limiting his cricketing opportunities.
