Sydney Thunder all-rounder Daniel Sams has ruled out the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 season due to severe concussion. Daniel Sams collided with teammate Cameron Bancroft while trying to catch the ball against the Perth Scorchers on January 3 , causing a concussion.
The all-rounder was ruled out for the season earlier this month after a collision with teammate Cameron Bancroft during a match, resulting in a broken nose and fractured shoulder blade. Sams began a mandatory 12-day concussion layoff, during which he flew back to Sydney from Perth.
Daniel Sams clears concussion protocol this week
The 32-year-old cricketer cleared his concussion this week and is available for the Sydney Thunder’s final regular season game against the Sydney Sixers on Friday. However, during his concussion recovery, a side injury became apparent.
Sams briefly left the field with side pain before the concussion incident, but later returned to the game. After further medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Sams had suffered a season-ending side strain that would sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland acknowledged Daniel Sams’ resilience. Copeland highlighted Sams’ valuable contributions on and off the field, but noted that his health must come first. He said Sams will remain an integral part of the team, even though he won’t play.
“Daniel has shown incredible resilience over the past week and it is unfortunate to lose him for the remainder of the season. His contribution on and off the field has been invaluable, but his health and recovery must be put on hold No. 1. The whole team is behind him and we will support him every step of the way,” Trent Copeland said.
“Daniel has been a cornerstone of this club for many years and is highly respected by everyone within the squad. Although he won’t be playing, he will still be an integral part of our team. As we complete the rest of the His calm demeanor, experience and leadership are vital in the dressing room during games.”
