Despite ailing health, former India cricketer Vinod Kambli attended a ceremony held at the Wankhede Stadium to celebrate the stadium’s 50th anniversary. A video circulating on social media showed Vinod Kambli struggling to walk but touching Sunil Gavaskar’s feet while celebrating the milestone at the stadium.
Vinod Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India, was admitted to Akuruti Hospital in Thane on December 21 with a urinary tract infection and cramps. However, doctors later discovered he had a blood clot in his brain. The 52-year-old former cricketer was discharged from hospital on January 1 and is currently recovering.

Vinod Kambli made a public appearance at the Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) organized the event to pay tribute to cricket legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Kambli, Sanjay Manjrekar and Wasim Jaffer.
At the award ceremony, Cambri, who was unable to walk normally, walked onto the stage with the support of two people to receive the award. He trudged on but came across Sunil Gavaskar’s feet. After his touching moment with Gavaskar, the former India batsman smiled and posed for the camera.

After being congratulated, Cambri reflected on his memorable double century against England at the Wankhede Stadium. He shared that this was the start of a multi-century career. Kambli also encouraged aspiring cricketers to work hard and remain dedicated, just like he and Sachin Tendulkar have done since childhood.
“I remember scoring my first double hundred against England and then scoring many more centuries in my career,” he said.
“If anyone like me or Sachin (Tendulkar) wants to play for India, then I would advise you to keep working hard and never give up on doing that because that’s what Sachin and I have been doing since childhood.”

MCA Chairman Naik spoke about the importance of the 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium, saying it was a special occasion. He stressed that the week-long celebrations were aimed at making the next generation aware of Mumbai’s cricketing history and the contributions of its male and female players.
“The 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium is a special moment for us. Today is the beginning of the grand celebrations,” Naik said.
“Our main objective of organizing the week-long event is to educate the next generation about Mumbai’s cricketing history and the contribution of the men and women who played for the city and inspire the younger generation to carry on the legacy.”
As part of the week-long celebrations, two exciting cricket matches were played between teams of MCA, SJAM, Consul General and IAS officials. The main event will showcase Mumbai’s legendary men and women from domestic and international cricket.
Cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar and cricket legends like Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav and Diana Edulji will also be present at the celebrations.
