Jodie Burrage took on Coco Gauff but lost in the second round of the Australian Open.
When the two met on grass in 2023, the 25-year-old British player won only two games, but she threatened to take the form player into the final set before falling behind 6-3 7-5.
Burrage, who missed most of last season with wrist and ankle injuries, vowed to enjoy the experience of playing on one of the biggest stadiums in the world.
And after a nervy start at Rod Laver Arena, she did just that, displaying her best tennis and seriously upsetting third-seeded Gauff.
Trailing 1-3 in the second set, Bragi won four consecutive games and served to enter the decider, but Gauff fought back to advance to the third round.
Burrage, who has experience playing on Center Court at Wimbledon and the Louis Armstrong Stadium at the U.S. Open, looked around Rod Laver Arena as she walked out.
It was going to be a quick night as Gauff took a 3-0 lead, and in the next game, Bratsch flashed a look of relief to her coaching staff after holding serve at 15-40.
From that point on, Burrage started playing better and better, taking advantage at every opportunity and forcing Goff to be on the back foot.
The American won the set and broke serve, but Burlage broke serve twice in a row. However, she failed to hold serve at 5-3, and consecutive double faults allowed Gauff to break serve again at 5-5.
“It was tough, she was serving really well,” the former U.S. Open champion said. “I just want to resolve this issue.
“She really stepped up her game in the middle of the second set. I was just trying to be as aggressive as I could. When I hit any short balls, she hit the winners.”
The Darts were defeated by No. 18 seed Vecchi
Harriet Dart failed to build on her success and lost to No. 18 seed Donna Vekic.
Dart made the most of her second chance, defeating qualifier Jana Fetter in a tough first-round match to earn the lucky loser spot.
Fet’s fellow Croatian Vekic moved up in class but Dutt played some of her best tennis to win the first set, only to lose 4-6 6-0 6-2.
Rain fell in the afternoon and play was moved to the far end of Melbourne Park, but Dutt performed well from the start and stayed ahead to seal the first set.
The British number four controlled Vekic’s pace well and used her speed around the court to great effect, but the Croat fought back early in the second set to turn the match on its head.
Dutt briefly took the lead in the deciding set, but she was unable to maintain her advantage and her frustration began to show as the match wound down and her Australian Open came to an end.
