Haney-Garcia lawsuit suspended as rematch talks progress

ESPN reports that Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have agreed to a 90-day pause in the lawsuit. They have reached a settlement and abandoned the plan.

The two fighters are close to reaching an agreement to fight later this year, and abandoning the legal dispute would pave the way for the fight.

Litigation stayed

The settlement resolves the lawsuit but requires finalization. Upon final determination, the lawsuit will be dismissed. Ryan said this was the condition he negotiated with Haney for a rematch.

Turki Sheikh wants this rematch. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) filed a lawsuit after testing positive for the banned substance ostarine following his April 20 victory over Devin.

Garcia will participate in the temporary game

Ryan revealed today that he has a mystery opponent for his next fight and he “can’t wait” for fans to find out who it is. That’s not Honey. There hasn’t been much interest in a second fight between them since Ryan eliminated him last April.

He will not fight him again unless he drops the lawsuit. This would make sense for Haney, as he would likely make more money fighting Ryan again than he would from the lawsuit. Without a rematch, Haney would have to compete with other fighters for less money and more risk.

Haney is not a big boxer and his career prospects are not promising at 140 or 147. He started out well at light welterweight, also with Regis Prograis Sr., but it will be more difficult for him to fight other fighters who are still in the game. At his peak, he can punch.

That’s why he has to have a rematch with Ryan. Even if his career collapses immediately, he’ll have huge paydays for the rest of his life.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia jointly asked the court on Wednesday to halt the lawsuit against Garcia for 90 days to reach a preliminary settlement, according to a legal filing obtained by ESPN.

The development comes as Haney and Garcia are close to reaching an agreement…
