Chris Billam-Smith is targeting Badou Jack and the WBC lightweight title to become world champion again.
In November, Gilberto Ramirez emphatic defeated Britain’s Billam Smith to win a lopsided victory for the WBO and WBA titles.
But the former champion has bounced back from that tough loss and is making a bid for the WBC belt, which is now held by Badou Jack following his reinstatement of the title.
“I’m back training and I feel good. Feeling really energized and motivated,” Billam-Smith told sky sports.
“I liked Badou Jack’s fight. I thought he had a connection with (Ryan) Rozicki (the mandatory challenger). I liked that fight.”
Billham-Smith is ranked fourth in the WBC rankings and will have a chance to compete for his eventual title shot.
He believed he could come back a better warrior. “He’s awesome,” Billham-Smith said of Ramirez.
“He’s a very special fighter. It was a very good experience for me to share the ring with him and learn and improve from it. All I can do is go away and get better.”
But he added: “It’s a tough loss to take because I just got beat by someone better.”
Messi calls on ‘CBS’ to fight
Another British lightweight to bounce back from a world-class defeat is Jack Massey. In October, the brilliant IBF champion Jai Opetaia stopped Messi.
“Positive things to take away from the fight. At least I can say I have a good chin!” Messi laughed.
“There’s no shame in losing to an elite fighter like that. I’ll be back and I’ll be back at that level.”
“He just overpowers everyone, doesn’t he? He’s an elite fighter and he’s proven that.
“I’m looking forward to his fight with Ramirez. They’ll talk about that next. I don’t think he’ll be in any trouble. I personally think he’ll probably get him out of there in eight rounds. But while the fight is still there Keep fighting.”
The Mancunian hopes for a high-profile clash with Billham-Smith. “We hope to come back in March, April. Get a win and then we can strive for bigger things,” Messi told us. sky sports.
“Look what Chris Billam-Smith has to say. That’s going to be a great fight.”
In fact, Messi defeated Billham-Smith in the ABA national finals more than a decade ago when they were amateur boxers.
“We’ve both come on in leaps and bounds since then but there’s no doubt it’s a great fight for me and I’m very, very confident going in and beating Chris Billam-Smith,” May West said.
“We both lost at that level, but we all wanted to get to that level. It makes sense, whoever wins will be fighting for the world title.
“It definitely makes sense, what a great fight it’s going to be. We both have great chins. We both love going at each other. It’s going to be a great fight.”
However, that’s not a fight Billham-Smith is focused on right now.
“To me it doesn’t really make sense. Jack’s best win was Isaac Chamberlain. He won the world title but it feels like a huge step back and I want to get into the big races where I can really game,” Billham-Smith said.
“No matter what, I’ll give it my all, but it won’t feel the same. What do I get for beating Jack? Sometimes I have to look at it that way. I don’t think I’m going to get any credit for beating Jack Massey.
“I want to compete at a world championship level. That’s what I want to do.”
