Ange Postecoglou has admitted his Tottenham Hotspur players simply “can’t accept” the miserable run of form they find themselves on.
2-1 defeat to Arsenal on WednesdayWhile mired in controversy, it was Tottenham’s 11th defeat in just 21 Premier League games this season – joining their previous unbeaten record from the 1997/98, 2003/04 and 2008/09 campaigns.
He leaves Spurs 13th in the standings, just eight points above the relegation zone with just two wins from their last 11 games.
“This cannot be accepted by anyone at the club, we lose too many games in the league season, it’s not fair,” Postecoglou said after the latest defeat.
“It’s not good enough, especially the first half, we were too passive, we allowed Arsenal to control the game. I’m really disappointed with the way we played with and without the ball, we allowed them to dictate. Tempo is our second. The half was slightly better but nowhere near as good.
“That’s not who we are. That’s not how I set the team up to play. It wasn’t good enough to sit back and let Arsenal play.
“There is no magic cure. We need to work hard and go to war on Sunday and turn our luck and our season around. There are always reasons why things happen but the reality is our results and form in the league are nowhere near as good. .that needs to change.
“We didn’t play anywhere near the identity of what we want to be. We’re an attacking team with and without the ball – we showed that against Liverpool but tonight we were too passive. That’s not acceptable. Second half. A bit better but that’s it. It wasn’t enough.”
Tottenham face Everton next weekend, before that at home to a struggling Leicester City side in January. Brentford, Manchester United and Manchester City are on the schedule in February.
