New Delhi — Popular Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was seriously injured after an intruder stabbed him repeatedly at his home in Mumbai on Thursday, but doctors treating him said he is out of danger after surgery.

“Khan has come out of surgery and is out of danger. He is currently recovering and doctors are monitoring his progress,” Khan’s team said in a statement.

Khan, 54, was “on the road to full recovery” after suffering stab wounds to his spine, neck and hand, doctors treating him told reporters.

Addressing the press after the operation, dr. Nitin Dange of Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, where Khan is being treated, said the actor “suffered a major injury to the thoracic spinal cord due to a stabbing in the spine”.

“An operation was performed to remove the knife and repair the spinal fluid leak. Two more deep wounds on the left arm and one on the neck were repaired by the plastic surgery team,” he said.

The attack took place early Thursday morning when Khan tried to prevent an intruder from entering his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra district, police and local media said.

Police have identified the attacker and launched a search for him, Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Dikshit Gedam told reporters on Thursday.

“The accused tried to enter through the fire escape. It appears to be an attempted robbery,” he said.

Khan is one of the most popular Indian actors. He has acted in more than 70 films and television series, and is known for his roles in hit romantic comedies, including Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Holy gamesNetflix’s first Indian production, which was released in 2018.

Khan is even a royal descendant. He is descended from the former royal family of the Nawabs, who ruled Pataudi, a small princely state on the outskirts of New Delhi. His father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was a popular cricketer in the 1960s. His mother Sharmila Tagore is a veteran actress who has acted in prominent Hindi and Bengali films.

Khan is married to actress Kareena Kapoor and together they are one of Bollywood’s most popular couples. They have two young sons, and Khan has a daughter from his previous marriage to another Bollywood star, Sara Ali Khan.
