Amorim was relieved to overcome Saints but urged Manchester United players to be better

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was delighted to see Southampton come from behind to beat Southampton at Old Trafford.

Manuel Ugarte’s own goal kept the hosts behind until the last 10 minutes, before some Amad Diallo magic rescued the Red Devils.

The 22-year-old scored a 10-minute hat-trick, completing the comeback and taking the team to 12th in the Premier League table.

And while Amorim was relieved and happy with the result, he couldn’t help but see his players’ casualness diminish.

He said: “It’s good in the end. A very difficult game, a game of two parts. They did a great job to Southampton. Create space between lines.

“No. 20 (of Kamaldeen Suleman) with a lot of space. We had a lot of trouble stopping that player. When they lose their physicality, we find space to use. The feeling is that we have a lot to do – the team is really tired.

“It seems like a lack of enthusiasm. Ugarte is late and Mainu is late, Bruno Fernandes goes out when the ball is in.

“One transition and Yoro can’t catch a guy – little things push the team back, and then we get nervous.

“It wasn’t a lack of enthusiasm today, it was a lack of control in the game.

“It was a win, it was good – let’s keep going.”

Amorim stopped to praise Diallo, who dug the former Sporting boss out of a hole.

He added: “Even in the first half, whenever Amad gets the ball he can push the ball.

“It pushes the other team into the final third – that’s really important. We didn’t have a good game, but winning is the most important thing at the moment.

The man himself was delighted with his match ball haul and even suggested United could win every game going forward.

Diallo said: “I feel good. I am very happy to score my first hat-trick at Old Trafford. But for me, winning this game was the most important thing and I’m happy for the club that we were able to win it.

“I’m very happy for the goal against Liverpool and today too. But the most important thing was to win and I am happy for that.

“I think the team believed until the end. Today we showed that we are the best team on the pitch. We were going to win this game and we finally did.

“Winning is important. It gives us confidence for the next match. We have to keep going and play like this. I believe in this team. We can win every match. We showed at the end that we are very good.”
