Asif William Rahman has admitted to transmitting classified defense information, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Asif William Rahman, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of “knowingly retaining and transmitting classified information” related to national defense, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday.

According to the plea agreement, he is scheduled to be sentenced on May 15. Both counts carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

“Mr. Rahman betrayed the trust of the American people by unlawfully sharing the classified defense information he was sworn to protect,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olson said in a statement.

“Today’s guilty plea demonstrates that the Department of Justice will spare no effort to quickly find and aggressively prosecute those who harm the United States by unlawfully revealing our national security secrets.”

The FBI arrested Rahman in Cambodia in November, and the U.S. government said he had been a CIA employee since 2016 and had a top-secret security clearance.

U.S. media reported at the time that U.S. officials accused him of leaking documents prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which analyzes images and information collected by U.S. spy satellites.

The NGA also conducts work in support of U.S. covert military operations.

The documents, which appeared on the Telegram messaging app’s channel in October, stated that Israel was moving military assets into position to conduct military strikes in response to Iran’s October 1 ballistic missile attack.

Iran said the launches were in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, the capital of Iran, and a senior Iranian military official was killed.

Citing court documents, the Justice Department said Friday that Rahman accessed and printed two documents marked “Top Secret” that contained defense information “regarding U.S. foreign allies and their planned actions against foreign adversaries.”

“Rahman took the documents, took photos and forwarded them to people he knew were not authorized to receive them,” the department said.
