We are in Latakia, riding with security forces just 10 days after the fall of the Syrian government led by former President Bashar al-Assad. We are told that one of their missions here is to find and arrest members of the old regime. The bigger goal, they say, is to secure the city, which until recently was the stronghold of the Assad family. We wanted to see if they would do it differently than their predecessors. We arrive at the house of a former officer of the Syrian army. Except he’s not the one arrested. These two suspects in custody are former rebels. They are, in theory, allies, part of a coalition of groups that have joined forces to topple the Assad regime. They have been targeting Assad’s army for years, but today it got them into trouble. We go inside to find out what happened. During our time with this security unit, they have insisted on their commitment to due process, even if it means helping a former enemy. The two fighters accused of the robbery are returning to the base, a complex that was formerly the headquarters of military security under Assad. Our guides wanted to draw attention to the legacy of the Assad government, a legacy of systematic repression, brutality and torture. Down the hall, the captured fighters will become prisoners here as well. Despite efforts to challenge the old regime, the question remains whether the new leadership can deliver a fairer system of justice in a Syria struggling with the ghosts of its past.
