“Caught off gourd”: A man gets an unexpected gift with an order of condoms from Swiggy Instamart

In a strange twist of online shopping, a Reddit user recently shared his awkward experience of getting two pumpkins for free after ordering Skore Skin Thin condoms from Swiggy Instamart. The post, titled “Swiggy Instamart gave me 2 pumpkins for free along with the condoms I ordered”, quickly went viral on the r/india subreddit, garnering over 4,100 votes and 223 comments.

The user, who goes by the handle u/odysseus-23, expressed surprise at the unsolicited addition to his order, claiming there was no option to remove the pumpkins from the purchase. He described the interaction with the delivery man as awkward, noting, “I had an awkward exchange with the delivery man.”

To illustrate his point, the Redditor shared screenshots of his billing and photos of the unusual order mix, confirming that the complimentary crested pumpkins were included as a topping with no way to turn down the free veggies .

The incident has ignited a wave of humor across the platform, with users stepping in with playful comments. Some joked about being ‘caught pumpkin’, while others speculated if this peculiar pairing was a deliberate marketing ploy by Swiggy Instamart to grab attention.

One user commented: “I’m sure instamart is sending these freebies on purpose. I guess they know people will share it on social media and get more engagement.”

This is not the first time that Swiggy has sent something hard to a customer. Last year in October, Bangalore-based product designer Chandra Ramanujan slammed Swiggy Instamart online after it automatically added free tomatoes to his order without giving him the option to withdraw them.

He described this practice as a “dark pattern,” which refers to design techniques that manipulate users into taking actions they may not want to take. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his frustration, stating that he did not want the tomatoes and found it unacceptable that they were added to his cart without his consent. He shared screenshots of his order to illustrate the issue.

A dark pattern is a tactic used by websites or apps to manipulate users into doing things they may not want to do.
