How TikTok “disappeared” in the United States

TikTok has been offline in the United States, just hours before new laws banning the platform took effect.

BBC News technology reporter Lily Jamali explains what causes this and shows what happens when she tries to access the app.

The social media platform previously warned that it would “shut down” on Sunday unless the outgoing Biden administration guaranteed it would not enforce the ban.

President-elect Donald Trump said he would “probably” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from its ban after taking office on Monday, but the future of the popular app in the United States remains unclear.
