David Lynch Honored With Free Documentary, Family Reflections

Earlier this week, the entertainment community was shocked by the sudden passing of David Lynch. As fans and collaborators of Twin Peaks CREATOR remember himhis family and the Criterion Channel want to help that in their own ways.

For Criterion, this means making the David Lynch: The Life documentary free to stream in the US, with or without a subscription, until January 31. Released in 2016, The Life covers the late filmmaker’s life up to that point, from his childhood and time as an art school painter to the start of production on his 1977 debut film, Eraserhead. If you have a Criterion sub, that documentary doesn’t have to be the end of it: the service also has several Lynch films in its catalog such as Eraserhead, Inland Empire, and Lost Highway, plus related documentaries, on-set footage, and “hours of interviews with the man himself and his key associates.” You can see Criterion’s Lynch playlist HERE.

Plus, David Lynch’s kids—Jennifer, Austin, Riley, and Luna—are there invited fans to join them in a 10-minute global group meditation at 12 PM PT tomorrow, January 20. That would have marked his 79th birthday, and the four children hope it will serve as a “celebration of his life. David was a guiding light of creativity, love, and peace. (…) Let us unite, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading of peace and love to the whole world. Please take this time to reflect, reflect, and send positivity to the universe.”

If you live in LA, there’s another way to remember David Lynch: visit Bob’s Big Boythe restaurant where he is said to have lunch every day at 2:30 pm for seven consecutive years. There he posed for a photo with director John Waters, creating a “chemistry lunch” for the future Peaks stars Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan, and he was there, listing many ideas for dining room napkins. Since the news of his death, the only Burbank location has drawn many visitors, and the five-foot Big Boy statue is currently a altar filled with messages and pictures from those connected with his work.

So if you need a way to remember or be immersed in the art and life of David Lynch, you have ways to do it, whether you’re at home or in California.
