NFL referees criticized for questionable calls in Chiefs’ playoff win over Texans

Houston edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. was whistled for roughing the passer on third down in the first quarter. Anderson appeared to push Mahomes in the chest after Mahomes threw the ball to tight end Travis Kelce. Anderson is tagged.

The second penalty occurred during a scramble by Mahomes in the third quarter. He has two blockers running and three defenders closing in on him. When he decided to coast, he moved to the right and then back to the left.

Texans linebacker Henry To’o’o hit Mahomes in the neck as he slipped. Despite the show’s explosive nature, To’oTo’o has been criticized for being needlessly crude.

The first penalty extended the range and ended with a field goal. The second penalty pushed Kansas City downfield and ended the drive with a touchdown.

Everybody we had to go up against today. Knowing going into this game, knowing what we’re going to be up against, We can’t make the mistakes we made.”

Anderson said the team knew it would be “us versus the referees.”

Texans running back Joe Mixon was also annoyed.

“Everybody knows what it is, playing here, you can never leave the game to the referees,” Mixon said. “But I mean the whole world knows what it is, man. It is what it is.”

Referee Clay Martin explained the calls to pool reporters after the game.

He said the penalty against Anderson was due to “forcible contact with the mask area” and should have been punished. He said someone made forcible contact with Mahomes’ “hairline” in another instance of unnecessary roughness.
