The crowd cheers as the first three Israeli hostages freed in the ceasefire return to Israel

Three Israeli hostages held in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel were freed on Sunday, hours after a long-awaited hostage exchange agreement came into force. Crowds flooded the streets of Tel Aviv, elated and relieved that progress had finally been made in bringing home the Hamas hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu faced an immediate political backlash as the country’s far-right Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir resigned in protest at the ceasefire deal, which he called a “deal of defeat”, weakening Netanyahu’s ruling coalition.
