Chelsea boss Maresca has defended goalkeeper Sanchez after the latest blunder

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca defended goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after conceding a goal against Wolves in the Blues’ 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

After Tosin had put Chelsea ahead Sanchez unleashed a corner at the feet of Matt Doherty who poked home the equaliser.

The former Brighton goalkeeper has now made four mistakes to score in the Premier League this season, only Ipswich Town’s Arijant Muric (5) has made more in the competition.

Maresca said: “You said it was the fourth mistake (leading to the goal)? Okay and how many times did he save us? More than four. So no problem.

“It happens. Mistakes happen from him, the strikers, the midfielders. He’s doing well.”

Chelsea signed Filip Jorgensen last summer and sent Capa and Dorde Petrovic out on loan with Bournemouth and Strasbourg respectively.

Chelsea had not won in the Premier League since mid-December but second-half goals from Mark Cucurella and Noni Maduke wrapped up the win.

Maresca was pleased with how his side responded to Sanchez’s error to end a five-game winless run.

“The first 40 minutes we were on top,” he said. “The performance was great and we dominated the game. We scored goals and created many more chances.

“Then in the last five minutes of the half what has been happening in the last five games happened again.

“Wolves had a bit of confidence and got their goal and then we started to struggle a bit. In the second half we started very well and then after the second and third goals we were in control.
