The department also noted that it does not record immigration status and does not share an individual’s immigration status with federal authorities.

City ordinance requires that if an immigration agency requests assistance with a civil immigration enforcement action, a supervisor must respond to the scene.

If the request is for assistance in enforcing civil immigration laws, the supervisor will deny the request, but if the request is not related to civil immigration laws, the supervisor will take appropriate police action.

“To be clear, the Chicago Police Department does not assist or interfere with civil immigration enforcement in accordance with the City of Chicago Municipal Code,” the police department’s statement read. “As always, if a crime occurs, we will continue to enforce the law regardless of the identity of those involved. How about citizenship.”

The police department’s statement comes a day after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson doubled down on his vow to oppose Trump’s sweeping reforms aimed at deporting dangerous illegal immigrants from the U.S. accused of crimes.

The mayor’s office assured that the city will continue to comply with the Illinois Trust Act of 2017, which prohibits local law enforcement from participating in federal immigration enforcement.
