WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Billionaire Elon Musk’s hand gesture while speaking during an inauguration celebration for President Donald Trump drew online comparisons to a Nazi salute on Monday, but a leading tracker of antisemitism said that it shows a moment of enthusiasm instead.

Musk dismissed criticism of the hand gesture as a “tired” attack.

Musk took the Capital One (NYSE:) Washington stage in great joy, pumping his arms and shouting, “Yesssss.”

“This is no ordinary victory. This is a fork in the road of human civilization,” he said. “This is a really important one. Thank you for making it! Thank you,” he said.

Biting his lower lip, he struck his right hand over his heart, fingers spread, then extended his right arm, vigorously, at a high angle, palm down and fingers together. Then he turned and gestured with the same hand to the crowd behind him.

“My heart is with you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is secured,” he said after he finished the gesture.

Movements are easily checked online.

“Is Elon Musk Sieg Heil at Trump’s inauguration?” asked the Jerusalem Post.

The Anti-Defamation League, which tracks antisemitism, disagrees.

“Looks like @elonmusk made a bad move in a moment of passion, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on the fence,” it posted on Monday.

“Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The attack of ‘everyone is Hitler’ is very tired,” Musk said on his social media platform X on Monday.

Shortly after his speech, Musk posted a Fox video clip of parts of his speech at X, which cut from the podium when he made his first move while facing the cameras. “The future is very exciting,” he wrote above it.

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Some X users came to Musk’s defense, claiming that Musk had stated “my heart goes out to you” and criticized posts that suggested otherwise.

Musk is backing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), an anti-immigration, anti-Islamic party labeled as right-wing-extremist by the German security services, in the upcoming national elections. He hosted a broadcast with the party leader on his social media platform earlier this month.
