More developers are creating VR software for Apple visionOS than for PlayStation VR2

In this year The GDC State of the Industry report — a large and far-reaching survey of game developers across all disciplines within the industry — asked respondents to detail their current and future plans for their software across different platforms. This, of course, also includes virtual reality and augmented reality developers, who seem to be largely coalescing around Meta Quest and Steam VR as their main landing zones for these technologies. That in itself is not surprising, since both platforms also dominate the 2024 VR / AR list.

A notable change in dynamics, however, is a flip between the PlayStation VR ecosystem – including the original PlayStation 4-compatible headset and the PlayStation 5 successor – and Apple visionOS – exclusively used for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. While last year the Vision Pro lost to the PlayStation headset 15% to 13%, in 2025, 26% of respondents said they were working with Apple visionOS software while 25% were trying PlayStation VR / VR2.

This is especially surprising since the PlayStation VR2 is a gaming-focused headset, which essentially has no other purpose than playing VR games, while the Apple Vision Pro is positioned as a device that productive multifunction. Apple’s own website for the headset doesn’t even mention gaming until halfway down the page. Not surprising, because at $3500, this is not a very mainstream device. PlayStation VR2 is struggling in the market for different reasons, led by a former PlayStation executive to say he is “wrong” about the potential success of the device recently.

It seems unlikely that any VR device will be able to gain market share from the Meta devices anytime soon, as it remains the most popular VR headset due in large part to a cheaper , subsidized price and unlinked format. It looks like the battle for mind share among VR developers is winding down for PlayStation unless something significant invigorates their VR brand in 2025.
