In the Champions League, Benfica gave Barcelona the winner in stoppage time but failed to win a penalty.

Raphinha scored a dramatic winner in stoppage time to help Barcelona come from behind Beat Benfica 5-4 in a wild game Almost guaranteed to advance directly to the last 16 of the Champions League.

The home side felt they should have been awarded a penalty in Barca’s late goal after Leandro Barreiro was pushed from behind by Ferran Torres in the box. VAR reviewed the appeal and postponed the celebrations for the winning goal but chose not to ask the referee to review his decision again.

Benfica led 4-2 with less than 15 minutes remaining on Tuesday, but Barcelona staged a stunning late comeback to fall three points behind leaders Liverpool.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored a hat-trick for the home side in the first half, thanks in part to two big mistakes by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

However, Robert Lewandowski’s penalty brace, Eric Garcia’s header and Raphinha’s brace helped Barcelona to a shock victory in Lisbon.

Benfica opened the scoring in the second minute when Pavlidis broke away from Paulo Cubas and scored from Alvaro Carreras’ low pass.

Barcelona reacted quickly after Alejandro Balde was brought down by Benfica defender Tomas Araujo, with Lewandowski scoring from the penalty spot.

The home side regained the lead through luck and Szczesny sprinted out to try to cut a through ball but bumped into Balde.

Greek international Pavlidis gleefully latched on to the loose ball and slotted his second into an empty net.

Barcelona hired the retired Wojciech Szczesny in October to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen but soon fell further behind.

Pavlidis completed his hat-trick on the half-hour with a penalty after another Szczesny error, with the goalkeeper flying to try and get away from Kerem Akturkoglu but knocking him down instead.

Lamine Yamal and Rafinha missed chances before the break as Barcelona continued to push forward.

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin saved what should have been a goal from Jules Kounde, with Lewandowski unable to turn from Pedri’s dangerous ball across the face of the goal go home.

Raphinha pulled a goal back for Barcelona in a bizarre move when Trubin’s head hit the edge of the box and flew back into the net as he cleared the ball.

However, Benfica were soon on the attack again, with Ronald Araujo pushing Szczesny into his own net as he tried to cut out a cross.

Barcelona continued to push forward after Nicolas Otamendi brought down Yamal, with Lewandowski converting another penalty.

The Catalan giants last won the Champions League in 2015. Garcia, who came on as a substitute, scored with a header from Pedri’s cross to equalize the score.

Szczesny saved former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria’s low shot before Raphinha’s dramatic winner.

With Benfica claiming a penalty, Barcelona broke quickly and the Brazilian winger scored to end a sensational clash.
