Glenn Maxwell showed fierce aggression in the 2024-25 Big Bash League knockout match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. Glenn Maxwell took an impressive catch and signaled the crowd for silence, reminding many of his former RCB teammate Virat Kohli.
The knockout match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars is currently taking place at the Sydney Showgrounds Stadium, with the losing team being eliminated. Notably, the Stars elected to pitch first after winning the bat flip. Thunder scored 135/7 in the 19th over at ENGIE Stadium on January 22.
Watch: Glenn Maxwell silences Sydney crowd with Kohli-esque gesture
In the 7th over of Sydney Thunder’s over, Matthew Gilkes tried to hit Usama Mir’s delivery for a six, but the shot was mistimed. Glenn Maxwell was in the distance, jumped up and quickly caught the ball. Gilkes was dismissed after scoring 26 runs off 16 balls with the help of 3 boundaries and 1 six.
After taking the catch, Maxwell celebrated the wicket with a silent gesture, placing a finger on his lips to ask the crowd to be quiet – a move reminiscent of Virat Kohli’s iconic crowd Silence gesture.

Matthew Gilkes survives after TV referee overturns catch decision
Earlier, Gilkes survived after being caught by Tom Curran on the bowling of Peter Siddle. The referee determined that the ball had touched the ground. The game was suspended due to a lightning and thunder weather warning. Play resumed after a short delay and was reduced to 19 overs per side.
“Oh, what a catch, geez, there have been some good catches this summer, the ball was low and hard and Curran put his hand underneath it,” Mark Howard said on Fox Cricket .
“Gilkes just stayed to watch the referee, but it looked clean. The referees were just discussing it.”
“There have been a number of games like this this summer across all formats and, again, depending on which dressing room you sit in, you can see what you want to see,” legendary goalkeeper Adam Gilchrist said.
“The ball did come through but it felt like it was going out again and he didn’t have full control of it and it made contact with the grass and that was enough for the third referee to say no.”
Thunder fail to appeal or review after Peter Hanscombe passes ball to goalkeeper
As of writing, Melbourne Stars are 29/3 in 6 games with Marcus Stoinis (6) and Glenn Maxwell (0) leading the way. Sam Harper managed just six from three balls, including a four, before being bowled by Nathan McAndrew while trying a circle shot.
Peter Handscomb could have been out after passing the ball to the goalkeeper. However, the Thunder failed to appeal or review the decision, giving Hanscombe a second chance. He was eventually dismissed at 11 for 15, with Tom Andrews trapped LBW in the 5th over of the run chase.
