completion three stages of Star Wars: Skeleton Crewit’s pretty clear who the breakout character is. It’s Neel the charming blue elephant with precious hair and aw-shucks charm. And, like clockwork, it’s time to put the character front and center in the fourth episode. An excellent, jam-packed, adventurous episode produced Star Wars history.
The fourth episode of Skeleton Crewcalled “Can’t Say I Don’t Remember Attin,” was made Star Wars in history it is only the second time that an Oscar-winning director has led something Star Wars. The honor first went to Ron Howard for Single and now, the Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinertwho made Everything Everywhere All In Oneheaded this stage of Skeleton Crew. So, I think, this is the first time that Oscar-winning directors have made a Star Wars Show Disney+. And, as expected, they crushed it, with a pretty spacious, cool episode with a little bit of everything.
The episode sees the crew heading to the planet At Achrann, which looks like their home planet of Attin, only older and dustier. Kh’ymm seems to be close, but his calculations are off (or at least the “Gems of the Old Republic” all seem to be colonized with the same structures and the same naming conventions). As the crew wanders they are discovered by the Troik, one of two warring factions on the planet. They are led by General Strix (played by Mathieu Kassovitz, best known to film fans as the love interest of Amelie) and his daughter Hayna (Hala Finley from Netflix’s We Can Be Heroes). The Troik are at war with the Hattans who, most recently, have stolen their eopies (recently seen making fun of a podrace on Tatooine, or on Obi-Wan Kenobi).
The Troik treats the children like adults, so the General wants to train the crew for battle. But Neel was having none of it. While Wim, Fern, and KB go off and shoot blasters, Neel plays the pacifist, getting Hayna’s attention. The two strike up a quick friendship during which Neel questions why his people have to fight in the first place and if they even know when, or how, it will end. “If it were me, I would just say I’m sorry,” Neel said. “No more fighting. But maybe that’s why I’m so scared. We know Hayna’s heart melted in that moment, because ours did too.
Neither he nor Neel can stop the inevitable though and so the Troik go to fight Hattan, with Strix forcing the children to the front lines. It’s an incredibly tense moment, and for a second you think Star Wars may have actually placed these children in the heart of a deadly battle. So, out of nowhere, Jod arrived. It seems he and 33 paid off Hattan (by checking Wim’s credits, much to his chagrin) and recovered the eopies for Troik. The good deed allowed him to save the children and continue their journey. A journey that has now stopped.
To find their way out of this strange carbon copy of their planet, the Troik suggest the crew visit the Fallen Sanctum, a place with Attin coordinates. Before they go, Neel asks Hayna if she wants to go with them. He can’t, he says he won’t forget her and gives her a little kiss. Even with blue skin, you could see Neel was blushing. These are all classic young love tropes, but those are tropes Star Wars rarely gets the chance to play, and it’s a pleasure to see here.
In the Fallen Sanctum, the crew found the coordinates of all the ancient planets except one: On Attin. That broke down somehow and, it turned out that 33 did it. At this point, his incessant repetition of “Can’t say I don’t remember Attin” from the first episode to now, plus his knowledge of At Achrann, let us know what’s going on here. The last captain of the 33 is looking for the Attin treasure and he destroys the coordinates (and helps kill any of the crew who see them) to hide the place. And, we know they got there, at least, because that’s where the ship got stranded.
Fern knew this too but when she wiped the order that blocked Attin from her memory, 33 blinked. He says that he is trained to tear anyone who asks for coordinates limb from limb when three things happen. One, 33 expands into a bigger, scarier droid. Second, Daniels flexes those directing muscles placing a camera on himself, giving us a close-up, third-person, Sam Raimi-esque view of his rampage. And three, Neel saved his friends by fending off 33’s attacks with a rock, inspired by his time with Hayna. When 33 brings Neel back, Jod has to save him by deactivating the droid at the last minute. Everything is small ALSO However, much courage for Neel, who quickly disappears when his friends celebrate him for saving their lives.
The latest Skeleton Crew a perfect, quick, STar War adventure. There is wish fulfillment, new characters and creatures, we can see and think about some actual morality, and young love is also in the air. Here’s hoping we haven’t seen the end of Troik–especially Hayna, for Neel.
