Do not fly your drone over an active wildfire. Although taking video of the devastation may be tempting, it can stop firefighters from doing their job. That’s exactly what happened in Los Angeles on January 9 when a drone collided with a “Super Scooper” plane that fired, The LA Times reports.
It comes as LA battles its worst wildfires in history, burning thousands of homes and killing at least 10. The crash of the drone forced the aircraft to abort its mission and arrive elsewhere for repairs. Photos of the plane show a noticeable hole in one of its wings:
Police are now trying to determine who was flying the drone, the LA Times reported, and the incident is being investigated by the FAA. The LA Fire Department warns that flying a drone during firefighting efforts can be punishable by up to 12 months in jail or a $75,000 fine.
