A player rating as a Sun Double brings Spurs to the brink of the last 16 of the Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur have one foot in the automatic last 16 of the Europa League after Thursday night’s matchday seven victory over Hoffenheim in Germany.

Spurs went ahead within the first few minutes, Pedro Porro controlling and finishing for a dream start by sending a long pass over the top into the path of James Maddison.

The second half of the night had an element of luck, created by Son Heung-min. Maddison’s deflected pass put the Spurs captain through on goal and Hoss looped a deflected shot past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Ahead of Hoffenheim’s onslaught after the break, Brandon Austin made an excellent save to keep the score-line at 2-0 in the first half. The hosts hit the bar through former Leicester City striker Andrej Krameric, before VAR intervened to overturn a penalty awarded against Austin.

Hoffenheim then pulled one back through Anton Stach, but Son restored breathing space for Spurs with just over ten minutes to play with a stepover and a low shot on goal from the left. And it proved decisive when substitute David Mokwa reduced the deficit again in the closing stages.
