Amazon is scaling back some of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, becoming the latest major corporation to make cuts to initiatives that critics have called “woke.”
In a message to employees last month, Amazon HR executive Candi Castleberry announced updates to the company’s representation and inclusion efforts and said the e-commerce giant would make some changes after having spent the last few years “evaluating its effectiveness.”
“We have worked to unify employee groups under one umbrella and create programs that are open to all,” says the note obtained by FOX Business. “Instead of having individual groups create programs, we focus on programs with proven results, and we also aim to foster a more inclusive culture.”
The release of the memo, first reported by Bloomberg on Friday, followed a report by The Information earlier in the day, which showed that Amazon had also recently deleted sections titled Black Equity and LGBTQ+ Rights from its page “Our positions” on your page. web site
In response, Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said in a statement: “We update this page from time to time to make sure it reflects updates we’ve made to various programs and positions.”
Amazon is the latest in a string of companies to push back on DEI initiatives in the past year, following fellow retail giant Walmart as well as Ford, Caterpillar, John Deere and Toyota. However, Amazon has been more subtle in its moves, unlike others like Meta, which announced sweeping changes to its DEI policies on Friday.
