Tottenham Hotspur’s season is in crisis with pressure mounting on Anj Postkoglu.
Spurs’ 3-2 loss to Everton left them 15th in the Premier League table – closer to the relegation zone than the Europa League.
The defeat, which left Postkoglu’s side trailing 3-0 at half-time to a team that had scored 15 goals in its previous 20 games, was Spurs’ 12th defeat of the season and continued against the Underground. The dismal record of the club Southampton. – Last 10 games.
Spurs’ dozen defeats this season are their most in 22 league games in more than a quarter of a century – and they have won just nine in the Premier League in the past nine months – Lost 24 of last 50 games.
So what’s next for Postkoglu and Tottenham Hotspur before a busy schedule of games on and off the pitch comes to a close at the end of January? sky sports news Michael Bridge explains it all…
Is there a lot of pressure on Postkoglu?
My understanding is that he wasn’t under any great pressure. I think there’s a lot of pressure because they’re 15th in the league. To them, this is unacceptable.
But Postkoglu said so himself. He also said that he was right, they were still playing three cup games but the league position was unacceptable.
So, there is pressure. But in terms of his job security, I do believe he still has the full support of the board.
But the next three or four weeks will determine Tottenham’s season. If the likes of Mickey van de Veen and Christian Romero return in the next few weeks, they could advance to the last 16 of the Europa League, they could reach the Carabao Cup final and they could beat them in the FA Cup Aston Villa.
And then you turn around and say, actually, this could still be a good season.
However, they could be knocked out of the quarter-finals with a defeat to Hoffenheim on Thursday, before they have two extra games to reach the final stages of the Europa League. They could lose to Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup and then to Villa.
If that happens, the months leading up to May could be tough.
Why should the board give him a chance this time?
I think people recognize that these injuries are impacting the team’s development significantly. These injuries weren’t just weird injuries, they were serious injuries.
One can blame his playing style for the hamstring injury. You can’t blame Postkoglu on Dominic Solanke kicking the ball and picking up a knee injury in training.
Postkoglu has been telling me and my colleagues over the past two or three weeks: Dom needs help. Now Dom is hurt.
It’s January 20th and no outfield player has been signed yet. Yes, January was difficult, but he does need some help right now.
Will Postkoglu receive this kind of support in the January transfer market?
I do believe so. They have to bring in players. January won’t be easy, but it’s achievable. Spurs had a good January transfer window.
For example, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur were January signings and are now two of Tottenham Hotspur’s best players. So it might happen.
But European clubs are not so keen on sending away their players in January. We now have European football games in January, which has never happened before.
But even so, I still believe Tottenham will bring in at least one player, but it needs to happen soon.
Where do Spurs fans sit in Postkoglu?
Mixed might be a fair assessment after the loss to Everton.
When he joined, I had never known such love. Postkoglu himself has said that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is like being in a nightclub. Even Robbie Williams started singing songs about him.
They then struggled against Chelsea, losing 4-1 on Monday Night Football. After that, the season went off the rails and Postkoglu never really recovered.
Many fans believe it’s not his fault that he’s not getting support. They felt the team wasn’t good enough, he needed money, and they needed better recruiting.
Some fans, however, were unhappy that he only had one way to play. Some believed the injuries were his fault, unhappy with the high line and open midfield.
Some people think he’s stubborn, some think it might be time for a change, but who do you bring in? We saw Ruben Amorim very uncertain as he joined a club with so much work to do in the middle of the season.
Daniel Levy has previously sacked Tottenham manager mid-season, how does this look?
I don’t know if the fans will accept a walk-on guy like Ryan Mason, like they did the past two times. From the complaints I heard, I don’t think they would accept this.
Postkoglu still maintains a good relationship with Tottenham’s hierarchy. Head of football operations is Scott Munn, an Australian and Angle supporter.
Postkoglu works well with Tottenham technical director John Langer. But the next three to four weeks will be crucial to Tottenham’s season.
If Postkoglu is sacked soon, where will Daniel Levy and Tottenham fans be?
I don’t think Daniel Levy personally would be in a rush to fire another manager.
But if he does, it will lead to a very tense final few months of the season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham are now plagued by injuries. Is there any explanation?
There is no doubt that risk exists given Tottenham’s style of play.
I also think poor recruitment has affected the club. I look at this team and I don’t think it’s a top-six team right now.
To be fair, I think Postkoglu probably didn’t give himself enough credit when he finished fifth in his first season without Harry Kane.
Spurs, who have been underperforming for several consecutive seasons, won 1-0 with Kane’s thunderbolt. They relied too much on him in the past. They were without him last season, but they still had a pretty good season.
This season, you’re going to see a lot of injuries and poor performances, and players like Son Heung-min who have had a tough season are a year older.
One of the most disappointing facts is that I don’t think they really planned extra European games, which is probably a collective responsibility.
Last season, Tottenham were not in Europe. They were knocked out of the FA Cup. They were eliminated in the second round of the League Cup. So they basically only have about 42 games.
This year, they have played their 34th game. They have two more European games this month. They secured a second-leg victory in the Carabao Cup. They have already won the FA Cup.
