New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighs in President Donald Trump’s Not all social media users believed her comments amid an ongoing tariff dispute with Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
The spat between Trump and Petro begins with Colombian leader refuse to accept Two deportation flights were deported over the weekend, prompting Trump to retaliate. Both leaders have threatened to raise tariffs on imported products by 25% to 50%, and Trump has ordered a travel ban and visa revocation for all Colombian government officials.
“I just learned Two repatriation flights Trump wrote on “Truth Social”, “A large number of illegal criminals from the United States are not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was issued by Colombian Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular among the people. Welcomed.”
“Petro’s denial of these flights has endangered the national security and public safety of the United States, so I have directed my administration to take the following urgent and decisive retaliatory measures immediately.”

Ocasio-Cortez insisted in a Sunday X post that American consumers are the only ones paying the tariffs.
“To ‘punish’ Colombia, Trump will make every American pay more for coffee,” the New York congresswoman said in a post. “Remember: We pay the tariffs, not Colombia.”
“Trump’s goal is to make inflation worse, not better, for working-class Americans,” she added. “He is enriching himself and the billionaire class.”
Petro seemed to be a fan of AOC’s post and retweeted it on his own X account.
While tariffs do have the potential to drive up prices, the importer (that is, the company or entity bringing the goods into the United States) will pay the actual duties to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
But price increases are no guarantee — and sometimes tariffs can lower global prices for goods as suppliers scramble to retain access to the massive U.S. market. Coffee suppliers in countries as diverse as Vietnam and Brazil, which produce more coffee than Colombia, may lower or maintain prices.

Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet had more than 47,000 likes as of 8 p.m. but was met with scorn from Trump supporters and tariff advocates.
“World record. 35 minutes and this tweet is as old as warm milk,” wrote the social media account Catturd, referring to Petro’s immediate offer to fly Colombian migrants on his presidential plane.
“Who cares to tell her that there are other countries exporting coffee, not just Colombia,” California Assemblyman Bill Essaly wrote.
Conservative commentator John Cardillo echoed Essali’s sentiments, suggesting the South American country “should bring back illegal immigrants.”
“Many other countries grow coffee beans,” Cardillo wrote on X, “and we can buy coffee from them.”
Activist Adam Lowisz responded to Ocasio-Cortez by insisting that the Democratic politician “doesn’t understand how tariffs work.”
“The price of coffee from Colombia will increase so we will buy coffee from suppliers in other countries who do take back illegal coffee,” conservative X user wrote. “If companies continue to underperform, they will be hesitant to invest further in Colombia.”
