Liverpool manager Arne Slott has admitted he has struggled to find a way to maximize burgeoning striker Darwin Nunez. Speculation About his future at Anfield.
Signed for £85m in the summer of 2022, Nunez has struggled to carve out a permanent role in Slott’s lineup, starting just seven times in the Premier League this season and chipping in with four goals in 26 appearances in all competitions.
Reports have linked Nunez with a move away Liverpoolwith Al Hilal and Manchester United are also tipped to test the Reds’ resolveAnd Slott has now admitted the 25-year-old is not a natural fit for his preferred style of play.
“Darwin is a striker that we’ve definitely got to use and we haven’t got the best out of him yet this season,” Sloat said.
“Against Accrington Stanley Again you see he has a lot of pace but, unfortunately for him, most teams sit far behind us. If you look back at the goals he scored for us, I remember against (Aston) Villa he went on a quick break around the goalkeeper, that’s his main strength.
“He has other qualities, but we’re still working on getting him in the best possible position against the low block. That includes timing, the right cross, the right place to start and making the right run.”
Slote, however, defended the low return against Núñez’s goal and argued that teams defend more against Liverpool than against other opponents.
“You have to give credit to the way teams defend our No. 9,” Slott said. “It’s never: ‘Here Darwin, you can score’. Every time we put in a cross I see a defender on top of it. I see it, the referees don’t unfortunately.
“For us, usually, it’s more difficult to score against a team like (Nottingham) Forest because every time we had a chance they had six, seven, eight, nine or ten players lined up in the 18-yard box.
“And one time (Chris) Wood had a chance he was almost there by himself. We weren’t really close to the ball. They only had one chance, we had 15. But with 15 we always had somebody. Close to the ball. Or one of our players, Darwin, will score his goals and do it again.”
