Arsenal ‘deserved to win by a mile’ in ‘unbelievable’ FA Cup defeat to Man United – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment after his side’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United – and said Gabriel Jesus’ injury “doesn’t look good”.

The Gunners had more than 70% possession and 26 of 33 shots between the teams in the all-Premier League third-round tie at the Emirates Stadium, only to go on penalties after a 1-1 draw against 10 men.

“I love my players and I couldn’t be prouder because it’s very difficult to ask for anything more than what they’ve done,” Arteta told BBC Sport, calling his team “incredible”.

“I love how good they are and what they do because in 1,000 games (like this), you have to lose one and (on this occasion) it was this one.

“It’s unbelievable. We deserved to win by a mile, but the reality is we’re out. The only thing that will be judged is that.”

Arsenal vs Man United

Bruno Fernandes gave the visitors a 52nd-minute lead before Gabriel equalized two minutes later after Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second yellow card.

Martin Odegaard saved a spot kick during the second half of regular time as part of an extraordinary performance by United goalkeeper Altay Bayandir, who also denied Declan Rice.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz became the only player not to succeed in the shoot-out when Turkey international Bayandir headed his effort past the post.

“It’s football… you need things to go your way and that didn’t happen tonight,” Arteta said. “When you go to a penalty, you know it’s a flip of a coin and it could go either way.”

Gabriel Jesus injury

Arteta’s side are on a three-match winless run in all competitions, losing 2-0 at home to Newcastle in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg five days ago.

Jesus is unlikely to help them return to form in the near future after replacing Raheem Sterling after 40 minutes against United.

The Brazilian forward missed 16 games last season with knee and hamstring injuries and underwent knee surgery during the 2022/23 season.

“No update, but it doesn’t look good,” Arteta said of the 27-year-old. “He was in a lot of pain. He had to get off on a stretcher and didn’t look good.
