Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s attacking unit “need some help” following injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. So could Benjamin Sesco become Arsenal’s target striker?
Although Arteta’s side set a club record goal tally in the Premier League last season, the Gunners’ forward options have been the focus of attention all season.
With Saka and Jesus sidelined and Kai Havertz’s return uncertain, Arsenal’s gap on league leaders Liverpool widens to six points and Arne Slott’s side have a game in hand. Scrutiny intensified during the January transfer window.
Arteta says Arsenal have identified potential targets, with RB Leipzig striker Cesco and Wolves striker Matheus Cunha two of the names linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The 21-year-old Sesco has scored 8 goals in 17 appearances in the Bundesliga this season and 14 goals last season. Slovenians are a popular people.
But a winter transfer deal that would bring him to north London now looks highly unlikely.
Leipzig want to keep Sesco. Club General Manager Marcel Schafer said sky germany: “There has been absolutely no contact with any other clubs and there have been no discussions whatsoever regarding Benjamin Cescó. We are delighted to have Benjamin joining our squad. He is one of Europe’s top attacking talents and is in excellent form. He will continue to wear RB Leipzig jersey.”
Currently, there is no push from Sesco to take action this winter.
However, will he be the one Arsenal turn to this summer?
The contract Cesco signed last summer did not contain a release clause, but an agreement was reached between Leipzig and the player.
If a suitable offer comes in, Sesco will be allowed to leave.
The exact amount is unclear. That could change depending on how he performs in the second half of the campaign.
However, it will exceed €65 million. Possibly up to 80 million euros.
Can Arsenal force a Cesco deal before the deadline?
Of course, money can make a difference and every player has his or her own price.
But signs now suggest Arsenal will need to invest huge sums of money if they really want to sign Cesc this winter.
This must be an offer that Leipzig cannot refuse.
The clock is counting down to 11pm on Monday 3rd February (deadline).
