England’s Lottie Woad stood out among Augusta National Women’s Amateurs, shooting 70 shots in the second round, standing with Kiara Romero in the No.99 match.
WOAD, a junior at Florida State University and the number one player in the women’s amateur rankings, won the competition last year.
She is now seeking to be the first back-to-back champion for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
The entire field will be held on Friday at Augusta National, before advancing to the top 30 and tie and playing the finals on Saturday.
“I have all the experience since the 48-hour period between the two,” Ward said. “It’s been positive for me.”
She added: “I know I’m earlier than Megha (the leader Ganne after the first round), so I just wondered if I could get some birdies to start and I could prove that I could catch her and manage to do that.
“I think I can definitely use it last year. I had the lead and then lost it. If it happens again, then I know I’ve been back from there before. So I think they are positive memories.
“I think the pins are definitely much harder, so I had to make some adjustments to that. There are some loopholes you have to get rid of a little bit, and yesterday I felt like I could really attack every pin. So today I have to be more patient.”
Romero’s double bogey on the fourth hole and fifth bogey fell on the rankings, but three consecutive birdies scored 68.
She said: “I feel like I have more control over the psychological aspects of it. I’m back-to-back in four and five and five, and I’m not getting me in the way at all. Actually, I’m actually in the last three holes of the birds. So I feel like that kind of performance is that my game is already mature.
“(I) just want to do my best to keep a record of the course and see where, where to make a good game plan for Saturday.”
Entering the final round, five players are within two shots of the lead.
Carla Bernat’s Escuder of Spain, as well as Andre Revuelta and Megha Ganne, lag behind WOAD and ROMERO. Ganne shot 73, 10 times worse than her start, but is still in the fight.
