Australian woman accused of poisoning 1-year-old girl, posting video for donations, police say


A woman in Australia has been arrested on charges that she gave a one-year-old girl various drugs to make her sick over a period of several months, then posted videos of the child online to solicit sympathy and donations, local police said.

The child was exposed to “extreme suffering and pain” for more than two months, between August and October last year, Queensland Police Service he said in a press release Thursday. The relationship between the 34-year-old woman, who was not identified by police, and the girl was not immediately clear.

Police said the woman “went to great lengths to obtain” illicit drugs, including “old drugs” for another person in their home, and that she “carefully concealed” her efforts to give the child the drug, including while she was in hospital in Brisbane where the child is hospitalized.

Hospital staff eventually discovered what the woman was doing and reported her to police last October, authorities said. On Jan. 7, tests performed on the child came back positive for unapproved drugs, police said.

According to for BBC NewsDetective Inspector Paul Dalton told reporters the woman had raised A$60,000, the equivalent of about $37,000, through GoFundMe donations.

She was arrested on Thursday at her home in Morningside, a suburb of Brisbane, on five counts of administering poison with intent to injure, three counts of preparing to commit a crime with dangerous substances and one count each of torture, creating child exploitation material and fraud, the police announced.

According to BBC News, Dalton told reporters that the child is now “safe and well,” and that no one else has been charged with the alleged abuse.
