Barcelona have confirmed that Ronald Araujo has agreed a new long-term contract with the club.
With his previous contract expiring in the summer of 2026, Araujo’s future has been a matter of uncertainty for some time, with the Uruguayan heavily linked with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United in recent seasons.
The versatile defender was also a potentially salable asset when Barcelona were desperate for a cash injection. But with the club now putting years of financial woes behind them, Araujo’s value on the pitch outweighs his value on the market.
The new contract is for six years and will run until the end of the 2030/31 season. If he sees it through, Araujo will have been a Barcelona player for more than a decade when it’s over.
Thw player joined Barcelona from little-known Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, initially joining the Athletic team and becoming a first team regular years later.
In 2023, Araujo became the third captain and was later promoted to vice-captain last summer when overall captain Sergi Roberto left the club.
A severe hamstring injury sustained during the Copa America that required surgery at a specialist clinic in Finland ruled Araujo out of the first half of the season. But he made a comeback against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey, wearing the armband in Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s absence, starting games against Real Madrid, Real Betis, Getafe and Benfica in four competitions.
