President Joe Biden preemptively pardoned a number of people, including coronavirus response chief Anthony Fauci and members of the investigation into the Jan. 6 riot, to prevent “unjust … politically motivated prosecutions.”
“Our country owes these public servants their tireless commitment,” Biden said.
Trump, who is due to be inaugurated later Monday, said he would take action against those who try to hold his supporters accountable for overturning the 2020 presidential election.
Biden also issued a preemptive pardon for retired Gen. Mark Milley, who described Trump as a “complete fascist” and “dangerous.”
“These public servants have served our country with honor and distinction and should not be the targets of unjust and politically motivated prosecutions,” the White House statement said.
“The issuance of a pardon should not be misconstrued as an admission that any individual is guilty of any wrongdoing, nor should it be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any crime.”
