President Biden Five more political activists and black nationalist Marcus Garvey were pardoned on Sunday on his last day in office.
“America is a nation built on the promise of second chances,” Biden said in a statement. “As president, I have used my pardon power to make that promise a reality, issuing more individual pardons and commutations than the U.S. “More than any other president in history. Today, I will exercise my power to pardon 5 people and commute the sentences of 2 people.” They have demonstrated remorse, healing, and redemption, and each has made significant contributions to the betterment of their communities. ”

In addition to Garvey, those granted pardon include Darryl Chambers, Ravidath “Ravi” Ragbir, Don Leonard Scott Jr. and Kemba Smith Pradia. Garvey was pardoned after his death.
The Biden White House described Garvey as “a renowned civil and human rights leader who was sentenced to five years in prison for mail fraud in 1923.”
President Calvin Coolidge commuted his sentence in 1927. “Notably, Mr. Garvey founded the Black Star Line, the first black-owned shipping line and mode of international travel, and founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, which celebrated African history and culture. Dr. Martin Luther King described Mr. Garvey as “the first person of color in American history to lead and develop a mass movement,” the White House said. “Advocates and lawmakers praise his global advocacy and influence and highlight the injustice behind his criminal conviction.”
