Dmitry Bivol can fight Canelo Alvare if he defeats undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev in a rematch on February 22 in Riyadh for a lucrative rematch.
Beterbiev blocks the way
Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn says Canelo can reach 175 if Bivol (23-1, 12 KOs) defeats Beterbiev (21-0, 20 KOs) next month , challenging him for the undisputed title.
The way Beterbiev finished the match strongly, Chasing someone who looks scared and tired Bivol is in the ring and is likely to win the rematch on February 22. Canelo has not said he wants to fight Beterbiev if he wins his second fight with Bivol. For obvious reasons, the only man who has a chance against the popular Mexican star is Bivol. He is a shrewd warrior.
The initial hope was for Bivol to defeat Beterbiev in their Oct. 12 fight and then challenge Canelo for all the gold. Unfortunately for Dmitry and Hearn, Beterbiev spoiled everything by winning a 12-round majority decision.
“I’m not sure what Canelo will do. What other fights does he have? Crawford, I don’t think that’s going to happen. “(David) Benavidez is 175 now. I don’t think he’ll ever get back to 168 and he had a great fight with (David) Morrell,” Eddie Hearn said trodden ground YouTube channel, talking about Canelo Alvarez’s picks.
“If Bivol beats Beterbiev in the rematch, Canelo can rematch Bivol for the undisputed title at 175. That’s a big carrot. “It’s a tough fight. Fight,” Hearn said.
Hearn is understandably interested in a Canelo-Bivol rematch. It would bring in a lot of money and his fighter, Bivol, would be the favorite to win. This isn’t a fight where Bivol faces huge risk of losing, like when he moves up to lightweight to challenge IBF champion Jai Opetaia. This would be a nightmare for Bivol.
Canelo has not mentioned wanting a rematch with Bivol recently, and it’s doubtful he would do so unless the money was big. He has 168 options to fight Terrence Crawford and several other fighters. Bivol was too big for Canelo in their fight three years ago and a rematch seemed pointless.
The first Canelo-Bivol fight
Three years ago on May 7, 2022, Bivol defeated Canelo by unanimous decision in 12 rounds at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The score was 115-113 x 3, but the battle looked more one-sided. Canelo later said he came into the fight injured and didn’t train well. He initially wanted a rematch but later changed his mind and never changed his mind.
